The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is an IMAX 3D Presentation.

Filmed as a fantasy trilogy, all three hobbit movies are once again set in Middle-earth, 60 years before Frodo’s adventures in Lord Of The Rings.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Dec 2012), follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs, Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. But it is whilst escaping the goblin tunnels on the way to the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain that Bilbo meets the creature Gollum, who will change his life forever. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake the unassuming Bilbo not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious”, a ring that holds unexpected qualities tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot even begin to know.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (the second film) is scheduled for release in Dec 2013, with the final installment - The Hobbit: There and Back Again, to be released in July 2014.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be presented in regular 24 frames per second at IMAX Melbourne.

The IMAX release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX 3D Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customised theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
