Johnny's estranged mother (Kyoko Baertsoen) was a famous, yet reclusive, aging rock star who spent her final days isolated in a mysterious old castle.
Upon her death, Johnny (Jasper Steverlinck), a young up-and-coming musician in his own right, is summoned to his mother's castle in accordance with her final wishes. An odd request, as she hadn't seen her son since he was three years old.
Upon his arrival, Johnny begins to discover that things are not as they appear. The castle begins to come alive as materializing spirits lead him to Mephisto (voiced by Harry Shearer), the ghoulish henchman to Mr. D (also voiced by Harry Shearer), the castle's custodian of evil. Mephisto informs Johnny that Mr. D has been waiting for him and that all of Johnny's questions will soon be answered.
But when Johnny ventures further, an unexpected visage appears from beyond the grave -- his disembodied mother. She warns her son to take heed: an evil presence lurks deep within the castle.
Mr. D appears out of the flames of the fireplace and makes Johnny a tantalizing offer. The same offer, Johnny learns, that his mother accepted over twenty years earlier: surrender your soul in exchange for unparalleled fame and fortune. Before Johnny can answer, Mr. D suggests that he accompany Mephisto on a tour of the more "restricted" areas of the castle in order to help solidify his decision.
While exploring the underworld of the castle, Johnny observes the fate of those musicians who dared to cross Mr. D. These unfortunate souls now exist in a state of perpetual doom, the most tortured being opera singers -- Mr. D's most despised tenants.
As Johnny makes his way back to Mr. D's lair with his decision, the spirit of his mother appears and urges him to leave the castle while he still can -- alive.
Johnny disregards his mother's advice and confronts Mr. D. Without warning, Johnny summons the power of opera, Mr. D's Achilles heel, and destroys Mr. D and Mephisto in an explosive performance that saves him from evil and ultimately sets his mother's spirit finally to rest....
